Tackling airport infrastructure
The abandonment of the airport remodeling project has left many of the facilities in decay. Chinedu Eze writes that addressing the huge infrastructure problem will help promote safety in the aviation industry.
The expectations of many Nigerians are that the new government will come up with fresh ideas and jettison the old, unworkable system in the aviation industry, which had left the sector moribund.
Stakeholders in the industry posit that it is high time a critical decision was taken to permanently solve the problem of infrastructure in the air transport sector. In 2011, when the immediate past administration began the airport remodeling project, many in the industry had expressed the fear that government would not be able to accomplish it because of the huge funds needed. But the then Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, now a Senator, was optimistic that government could really transform the airports and in less than two years, some of the airports were transformed and new structure, like the General Aviation Terminal at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, where new terminal facilities were built.
