INTEGRITY IN LEADERSHIP: 20 Most Outstanding Nigerians
Ms. Adebisi Awoniyi: A Corporate Goal-Getter
Her peers in the nation’s aviation industry are few. Her reputation has become a reference statement of competence and resourcefulness while her accomplishments are ringing endorsements of value of genius and productivity of vision.
Born in 1962, Ms. Adebisi Awoniyi, daughter of the late nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Sunday Awoniyi, is the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the first and only privately built and operated airport terminal in Africa, the Murtala Muhammed Airport Two (MMA2), which is operated by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL). The terminal has been adjudged the most successful Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) project in Nigeria. Also, MMA2 has, in the last three years, been consistently adjudged the number one, as well as the best run, airport terminal in Nigeria.
MMA2 is the first and only airport terminal in Nigeria to fully automate her operations through the deployment of the Common User Passenger Processing System (CUPPS). This include the introduction of the self-service check-in kiosks, automated access gates and the Baggage Reconciliation System (BRS). MMA2 has also been adjudged one of two cleanest places in Lagos State, Nigeria’s economic capital, by the state government.
Widely acknowledged as a stickler for best practice in airport terminal operations in sub-Sahara Africa, Awoniyi, no doubt, sets the pace, quality and trend in airport terminal operations and the aviation industry in general.
Perhaps, the effect that Awoniyi’s hard work, creative energy, panache and drive for excellence has had on the operations of MMA2 is best captured in the following quote from the immediate past Nigerian minister of aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka: “I think MMA2 has offered the template about how government should go about the issue of the operations of airports in the country. Feelers from the stakeholders in the industry including pilots, grand handlers, etc. also gave it to MMA2. We want to believe that the improvement in passengers’ experience in MMA2, the continuous quest for improvement; the continuous quest for excellence, will be sustained. This continuous improvement is something I would like other managers of airports in Nigeria to begin to emulate.”
Awoniyi is an accomplished leader in the application of best-in-class methodology and execution of strategic direction of Operations, Management, Standardization and Leadership; offering over 25 years of progressive experience facilitating the analysis of best practices and procedures designed to improve operational safety, project delivery, profitability and programme effectiveness within the aviation and hospitality space.
